About

Old North Sconery is a scone shop first, and the kitchen treats that as a full-time job: more than seven flavours come out of it daily, all handcrafted from scratch. The sweet side runs from a blueberry lemon with berries worked through the dough and a house-made lemon glaze to a cranberry orange built on fresh cranberries. Savoury holds up its end with an aged cheddar chive made on Woodstock's Brights cheddar and a pepper and parm topped with parmesan. Vegan and low-sugar versions are on the menu too, from a vegan lemon and a vegan blueberry to a low-sugar lemon.

The rest of the room is a market. The market carries Ontario goods, from Mill House mac and cheese to frozen soups made in Stratford and St Jacobs lasagnas for a night when cooking isn't happening. Sandwiches come on sourdough with the shop's own herbed butter, turkey and cheddar or beef and cheddar. The chocolate chunk cookie leans on Lindt chunks and Callebaut chips, brownies are fudgy and big, and there's house-made Italian ice in lemon and strawberry alongside soft serve from London Ice Cream Company.

Coffee gets more attention than a bakery has to give it, with cappuccino made on locally roasted beans to pair with whatever's in the case. The scone case thins out as the day goes on, so earlier is the safer bet when you've got a flavour in mind. The vegan blueberry is built on plant-based butter and vegan cream rather than a workaround.

Must try

The blueberry lemon scone, berries through the dough and a house-made lemon glaze on top.

Local tip

Scones sell through and the case thins out later in the day, so go early if you have a specific flavour in mind.
