Bluebirds – Cast Announcement and Performance Dates

Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) Museum – Multi-purpose Room Carling

About

Theatre Aezir is staging Vern Thiessen's Bluebirds in the multi-purpose room at the Royal Canadian Regiment Museum. The story is set in 1918 in Etaples, France, where three Canadian nursing sisters work a field hospital through the last months of the First World War.

Those nurses wore distinctive blue uniforms, and the nickname stuck. On stage they're Maggie, Christy and Bab, played by Makayla Ashenden, Liv Farquhar and Jaiden French. Thiessen writes them as three very different people in one extraordinary circumstance, and the play tracks the friendship they find as the front lines draw closer.

It's a story about war, and also about women. Bluebirds is moving and often unexpectedly funny, a play about friendship, courage, sacrifice and finding hope even during the darkest times. Elizabeth Durand directs and designs the set, with Mike Semple on lighting and Andrew Petrasiunas handling the score and sound.

Theatre Aezir is a professional London company with no permanent stage, so every show gets built around the space it lands in.

  • Three characters, one hospital Maggie, Christy and Bab are the entire cast.
  • Built for the room Theatre Aezir works without a permanent stage, so each production is shaped around whatever venue it lands in.
