Nico Williams: Bingo

Museum London Central London

Next: Tue 3 Nov

About

VHS tapes, grocery flyers, lottery tickets: everyday objects and pop culture references, rebuilt in glass beads as large-scale work. Bingo is Williams's first major solo museum exhibition, and it comes to Museum London with a newly commissioned artwork made specifically for the space.

The show takes the game of bingo as its starting point and follows it outward into chance, value, exchange and community. Williams draws a line from the game's history to glass bead production and to beadwork practices across Turtle Island.

Williams is a member of Aamjiwnaang First Nation and an alumnus of London's H.B. Beal Secondary School. He lives and works in Montreal, holds a 2021 MFA in Sculpture from Concordia, and took the 2024 Sobey Art Award. The exhibition is organized by PHI in Montreal and presented in collaboration with Museum London.

There's programming alongside it as well: a Bingo Night with Williams and host Sara Mai Chitty for Treaty Recognition Week, plus a beading workshop led by artist Janet Antone.

What to expect

  • Beadwork at scale The show gathers new and recent large-scale beadwork and sculpture, built from glass cylinder and seed beads.
  • Sobey Award winner Williams took the 2024 Sobey Art Award, and this is his first major solo museum exhibition.
  • New Museum London commission A newly commissioned artwork made specifically for Museum London appears alongside recent pieces.
  • Bingo as the hook The game anchors an exhibition about chance, value, exchange and community, tied to beadwork histories across Turtle Island.
  • Related programming A Bingo Night with the artist and host Sara Mai Chitty, and a beading workshop with artist Janet Antone, run alongside the exhibition.
